Top 5 Mistakes To Avoid During The Interview Process

If you have taken the eTalentTraks employment skill assessment and have been subsequently called in for an interview by one of the many employers who utilizes our employment screening software, you know that you have already made the initial round of cuts and that you are technically a “fit” for the job. But don’t get too confident just yet! Many job candidates become over-confident as they progress on to each step of the interview process.

Here are the top 5 fatal interview mistakes you want to avoid as you near employment:

  1. Never bad mouth your past bosses or co-workers. By speaking ill of people you have worked with in the past, a potential employer can assume that you are a malcontent employee who will likely speak ill of future employers as well. Just as you should not complain about your exes on a first date, you should never complain about your ex supervisors or colleagues during an interview.
  2. Avoid being too relaxed. The interview process is no ordinary social situation. During the interview you are expected to defer to the interviewer, treating them with respect. You should appear eager so that the interviewer can get a sense that you care about the job. Do not sit back in the chair or slouch to appear more relaxed, it is preferable to sit on the edge of the chair with your back straight, ready to answer any question that is given to you.
  3. Avoid rambling answers. Provide clear, concise answers that directly correspond to the question that is asked of you. Avoid long, rambling answers to questions that lose the interviewer along the way.
  4. Be early to the interview. By showing up early to the location of your interview you will avoid being rushed and ensure you have enough time for any last minute bathroom breaks or calming breaths needed before the interview process begins. Also, by being prompt to the interview, you are demonstrating that you value the interviewer’s time and that you are reliable.
  5. Do Not Discuss Hot Topics or Personal Issues. There are a number of things that are off limits to discuss during an interview including any issues you may be experiencing in your personal life as well as your religious and political views.

By following these simple rules while being on your best behavior, you are sure to breeze through the interview process into employment. And if you are still trying to obtain that coveted interview, get started today by taking the eTalent Traks employment competency test and get matched up with jobs that fit your work style!
